Since the 1960s, therapists have been applying behavior analysis to help children with autism and related developmental disorders. Behavior analysis focuses on the principles that explain how learning takes place. Positive reinforcement is one such principle. When a behavior is followed by some sort of reward, the behavior is more likely to be repeated. The learner’s day is structured to provide many opportunities both planned and naturally occurring to acquire and practice skills in both structured and unstructured situations. The learner receives an abundance of positive reinforcement for demonstrating useful skills and socially appropriate behaviors. The emphasis is on positive social interactions and enjoyable learning. Research has found that ASD can likely be detected by 18 months. By age 2, a diagnosis by an experienced professional can be considered very reliable. However, in the United States, the average age of diagnosis is after age 4. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all children be screened for autism at 18 months and at 24 months, yet only about half of primary care practitioners screen for autism. This delay means that children with an ASD might not get the help they need. Diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder before the age of 4 means that a child is more likely to get effective, evidence-based treatment, such as applied behavior analysis therapy.
